Auction House Scams on WoW

By WOW Zon

New players often times fall victim to gold profit over-listing scams One of places that you can become easy meat for these advanced players is at the auction house.

It is amazing that new players are still joining the World of Warcraft after 4 years, but not amazing when you consider just how fun and adictiving this game is. As more players are signing on, more servers are needed to take care of them. This is where this particular auction house scam is more prevalent. And it is at the auction house that you will be spending a lot of time if you are indeed looking to build wealth.

This article will cover the over-listing scam. What happens is this…

As a new player you will be looking for specific items sold at the auction house. These things may not be very expensive, but to a new player, who is unaware of their value, they can be very lucrative to the over-listing scam artist.

First the savvy player waits for a low cost item they want to profit from is sold out. Once there are none of the items for sale left, the scammer will put the item up for sale at a very high cost. Many times three to four times their actual worth. So, an item that usually sells for perhaps 10 gold on average, they will post up for 30 gold.

In order to create a market for this item they now begin pushing the item by means of a message in the trade channel. Because these players use different characters to run this scam it is hard to spot them. One character places the item for sale, the other character places the request in the trade channel. In the trade channel they begin to request that item stating they will pay 40 gold to the seller.

Players who are at the auction house then see that the item requested in the trade channel is actually selling for 10 gold less and that they can buy this item for a 30 gold and turn around and sell it for more in the trade channel making an easy 10 gold profit. However, once the new player or unsuspecting player buys the item, the scam artists withdraws their offer to buy the item.

The best way to avoid falling victim to this type of action house scam is to become familiar with the true value of items at the auction house. If you end up on a newer server, pay close attention to this type of scam because new servers are more vulnerable to them. There is also an add-on called, “Auctioneer” that will help you learn the real value of items saving you a lot of time and keeping you safe from WoW auction house scammers.
